Tech News # 8 Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Breaks Pre-Order Record in South Korea It has been a week since the launch of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 and the phablet has reportedly already broken the record for most pre-ordered Galaxy smartphone in the company's home country South Korea. According to a report by The Korean Herald, the company has received over 200,000 pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 within two days of its announcement, which is supposedly double what the Galaxy S7 received. Samsung has been busy promoting the Galaxy Note 7 in the country, offering deals such as free Gear Fit 2 worth KRW 198,000 (roughly Rs. 12,000), 50 percent discount on screen repair, and a gift card worth KRW 100,000 (roughly Rs. 6,000) with every purchase of the device. Tech News # 6 Mumbai to Have 1,200 Wi-Fi Hotspots by May 2017: Fadnavis As part of transforming Mumbai into a Smart City, the state government will provide as many as 1,200 Wi-Fi hotspots in the megapolis, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Friday. "We are making Mumbai a Wi-Fi city by May 2017 with 1,200 hotspots at important places," Fadnavis said during a debate on issues related to urban development in the state Assembly. This was another important step after the CCTV project towards making Mumbai a Smart City, he said. Of the total of 1,200 hotspots, 500 will be operational in the first phase by November 2016, Fadnavis said. Tech News # 5 Android Captured 97 Percent Smartphone Market Share in India in Q2 2016: Strategy Analytics Research firm Strategy Analytics on Thursday said that Google's mobile operating system Android captured 97 percent of the total smartphone market share in India in terms of shipments, to retain its top position during the second quarter of 2016. "Android shipped 29.8 million smartphones in India in Q2 2016, growing an impressive 28 percent annually from 23.2 million units in Q2 2015. Android maintained first position across India with a record 97 percent OS share for the quarter, up from 90 percent a year ago," Strategy Analytics' Executive Director was quoted as saying in the release. The total smartphone shipments in India grew 19 percent year-on-year to 30.7 million units from 25.8 million units in April-June last year, Strategy Analytics said in its release.
